There are five types of intruders attacking your computer everyday. Virus protection is an absolute must if you surf or download off the Internet, use email, or use files over a network or even use diskettes.
The main three types of infections your computer can get are Virus, Worms, and Trojan's. All of these are bad and can do wide range of damage to your computer. Some worms can damage the file system on your hard drive, the only fix is to completely reinstall windows. Some Trojan's programs have been known to gain access to your computer files, web cams and your microphone. (Can someone be watching you or listening to what you say!) The bad thing is all three of these types of infections are getting more complex everyday. They are getting so sneaky and stealthy, you might not know if your computer has been infected. Even the best virus protection can sometime miss a new virus when there not keep up-to-date. So If your computer has gotten a virus that the software didn't catch your computer could start acting up, running slow, or you start having sound or video problems. Be careful of what you download, and don't open Email attachments.
The other two are are Ad-Ware and Spy-Ware. Both of these are added to your machine when you visit web sites or download programs from the web. They are used to let suppliers (companies) trace what web sites and products you are looking at. These programs will slow your computer down a great deal.
